The artist...
My name is Nathaniel Andrews, I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. I began tie-dyeing in 2016 during a senior class experiment done in chemistry class, where we studied the chemical reaction that happens during the dye process (fun fact; I actually did not have chemistry scheduled for that day, so I skipped another class to attend this project.) Ever since then, I have fallen in love with counter-culture as a whole. I've never fit into the "normal" box, and I'm sure many of you can say the same for yourselves. I find inspiration in many facets of life, especially in nature as well as sacred geometry. Tie-dye has its' historic roots within the psychedelic community, really taking off while Deadheads followed The Grateful Dead on tour, making a living selling lot dyes. I truly feel at home within this trippy, loving, non-judgmental community. I strive to create eye-popping dyes that really stand out in a crowd. One of my goals as a creator, is to add some color to a world that, at times, can seem so dark.
Tie-Dye Cup
In 2022, Knotty Rainbows was invited to participate in the first official Tie-Dye Cup, held at the renowned glass event called DFO (Degenerates Flame Off) in Portland, Oregon. In this event, I worked along-side some of the most renowned dye artists in the world. A film crew was in attendance to document this event, all of the artists were interviewed and a film documentary was put together to commemorate this historic event . You can view this movie here.
Knotty Rainbows was invited back to participate again in 2023. We look forward to our next opportunity to create art for the Tie-Dye Cup. This event is crucial for high-end tie-dye to be recognized in the artistic community as a serious art form.
